This is a wild frenetic album, at first sounding like a crime jazz collision with exotica; it’s Johnny Edwards’ interpretation of the rituals of the Bantu people of Southern Africa, a dramatic, breath taking charge that’s a dark and percussive trip, littered with trumpets salvos and rampant percussion plus vocal parts that sound like a Frat House were let loose in the jungle before it all gets a bit Yma Sumac. Edwards himself worked closely with Stan Kenton on some of his more out there compositions. A gem.
