about

From the very start pianist John McFarland’s only stab at exotica, ‘Provocatif’ from 1959, flows with a jazz vibe that propels proceedings, with the flute of Roland Alexander adding much more substance to the bird noise-infiltrated grooves and McFarland’s staccato playing (especially on the likes of ‘Watusi’ which really stands out. With Johnny Rae on mallets, it's all about the timing and the arrangements here singling this album out as a buried treasure that avoids any of the twee elements of the genre. McFarland himself went on to work with Aretha Franklin and he also co-wrote Billy J Kramer’s ‘Little Children’. Nice cover too.
